Dendrites – short tree-like structured fibers, which extend from the neuron body. They have terminals which together with other incoming axons form synapses. Neuromediators released by axon trigger change of the potential of the post-synaptic terminal. Together dendrites of the neuron can accumulate enough charge and action potential will be produced.

  • Neuromediators released by neighboring axon into synaptic space binds to special pumps on the dendrite’s terminal and triggers the exchange of Na and K ions between dendrite and surrounding fluid.
  • The branching of a dendrites is an ongoing process and play a role in brain plasticity.
  • In the nervous system dendrites are growing or retracting.
